Regina looked down at the table, her finger tips tracing the surface as Ruby spoke. She tried to speak, but couldn’t find the words. She wanted to say something like, No. It’s fine, dear, but she was quickly interrupted as Ruby switched to a more formal tone. And, as she attempted to leave, Regina tugged on her arm. “Wait, Ruby,” she cried, furrowing her brows. “Just answer this one question. Was I an awful mother to Henry?”
Ruby looked into the woman’s eyes, seeing the pain and worry swimming through them. With a sigh and a pained look she sat back down in the booth. She wanted nothing more than to help Regina in any way she could. “L-Look..” she said, her eyes dropping to the table as she traced her fingers on it. “At times, you really weren’t the nicest to the boy. You were controlling and a bit frightening. But as time went on, you showed him, and all of us that you really do love him. Henry needs time. Honestly he keeps getting hurt from all sides and I don’t know how much more he’s gonna be able to take.” Ruby looked back up at Regina. “You’re not a bad mother.” she stated firmly. “You’re just a mother. And no mother is perfect. You’re going to make mistakes. But it’s all going to work itself out.” She offered the woman a small, reassuring smile.
Regina nodded and leaning forward on her elbows as Ruby sat across from her in the booth. “Thank you for being so honest with me, Ruby. Many would not have done so. I know I’ve done too much wrong to apologize for, but I am trying to change for Henry. But, it’s going to get more difficult with my mother in town,” she informed, a slight scowl forming at the mention of her mother.
